Netflix’s newest rom-com “Your Place or Mine,” was released on Feb. 10 with dreams of the future, miscommunication and a chance to restart an old romance.
“Your Place or Mine” follows two friends, Debbie (Reese Witherspoon) and Peter (Ashton Kutcher), who consider themselves to be best friends since the early 2000s and have a brief romance in college. After college and going their separate ways, they remain in a long distance friendship for the next 20 years.
Debbie, now a single mom living in Los Angeles, wants to take courses in New York to pursue a degree in statistics. Peter encourages her to take them and stay at his place while she is visiting. Both are excited to see each other, but then there’s a sudden change of plans when the babysitter for Debbie’s son, Jack (Wesley Kimmel), cancels at the last minute. Although Debbie was going to cancel her plan to go to New York, Peter convinces her to trade places for the week. She agrees and as they swap living arrangements, both Debbie and Peter find themselves with life changing decisions about going back to their current life or creating a new one together.
“Your Place or Mine” is an entertaining movie to watch, especially with a group of girlfriends. It's full of funny scenes and leaves you with a rollercoaster of emotions. It's a movie almost anyone can relate to. In some aspects, there are ways I can relate to Debbie, Peter and even Jack. The way that Debbie and Peter interact and communicate is in an interesting and indirect way. They say they know so much about each other because they talk everyday, but when you watch the movie, you are in for a twist.
While watching the movie, I saw myself feeling some of the emotions that the characters in the movie were expressing. I can reflect on how my own actions and decisions have impacted my life. Peter and Debbie live completely contrasting lives, one being a single mom trying to get by and the other as a single rich man living in his million dollar penthouse. However, they have the same passions and hobbies, like reading and writing, but don’t act on them.
Debbie tries to be reasonable and responsible by getting a degree in something that will benefit her and her son by making more income. I relate to this because sometimes I have to sacrifice things I like to do in order to achieve something more that will benefit me more in the long run.
Another fun thing seen in this movie is the way Peter helps Jack out with problems with his friends and more guy related things. On the other hand, Minka (Zoe Chao), who is one of Peter’s exes, helps Debbie out with more girly problems. Minka becomes the girl best friend Debbie never had and Peter becomes the male role model and best friend Jack never had. Sometimes a little time away to hangout with friends is something I’ve needed. I also think this goes both ways as seen with Jack and Peter. Jack has a strict mom who is constantly sheltering him, which limits him from having a fun teenage life. My parents used to be strict on me as well and monitor who I could hang out with when I was younger.
Despite the stressful rollercoaster of emotions and the frustrating miscommunication, this movie was overall very cute and fun with some good laughs in it. I recommend this movie for anyone who enjoys romantic comedy.
