With the new year in full swing and a new state law requiring free lunches for all, there has been an increase in students waiting in the lunch lines for food, causing frustration among many of the other students.

Vandalism at school has been an issue for years, but has recently gained attention again due to the current restroom closures. The boy’s bathroom vandalization on Sept. 2 initiated a series of bathroom closures across Pioneer, leaving only the 450-wing bathroom open for boys, including the closure of the gender-neutral restroom. The recent vandalisms are most likely inspired by the TikTok “Devious Lick” trend, encouraging students to steal from and vandalize their schools.

I will never forget the first time I saw my name in news print. Even after years of seeing it in middle and high school yearbooks, in 1999 I had my first byline in the Chico State paper “The Orion,” and it changed my life. Even after almost three years of college papers, and four years of professional newspapers, I never got over the thrill of seeing my name at the top of a story, in grimy gray and black ink.
