Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election and is set to become the 46th president of the United States, creating hope for change in the future. However, Biden’s win is meaningless if he fails to follow through on the promises made during the buildup to the election.
In order to show a devotion to meaningful and progressive change, Biden will need to do much more to prove that he is actually suited to the job which the presidency entails, since his main qualification during this presidential race was that he was just “anyone but Trump.”
With only 10 years left before climate change causes irreversible damage and with COVID-19 cases and deaths increasing everyday, it is essential for Biden to prove himself by acting swiftly once in office. In the meantime, his selections of qualified individuals for his coronavirus task force and his frequent addresses to the nation have shown his commitment to the American public, a trait that the current president, Donald Trump has failed to demonstrate.
Joe Biden won a fair election and Trump’s refusal to acknowledge or accept his loss is quite dangerous to America as he continues to propagate false information while casting doubts on the ballots that uphold our democracy. Over 290,000 Americans have died of COVID-19 and this amount is growing by thousands every day while he has refused to attend a coronavirus task force meeting in months, and works on overturning the election. His followers refuse to wear masks even after our schools have shut down and our county is in the purple tier.
It’s disappointing that the man who holds the highest office in the world’s oldest modern democracy refuses to accept the results of a fair election, but after so many lives have been lost to COVID-19 and Trump’s refusal to acknowledge how serious this pandemic is, it hasn’t come as a surprise.
As journalists, we are committed to informing readers to make their own decisions based on the facts, and it’s frustrating to see misinformation being spread so successfully when attacks are simultaneously made on those who speak the truth.
Dangers such as the coronavirus and climate change are questioned and ignored despite the scientific evidence backing both of them. Trump and the Republican party propagate dangerous lies about the effectiveness of masks and continue to allow practices harmful to the environment such as fracking. They ignore statistics which show that Joe Biden won a fair election yet continue to sling out allegations of voter fraud.
It has come to the point where people need to swallow their pride to ensure that we have a future. The Republican party has gotten away with lying to the general public to further a false narrative. Although students may identify as conservatives or support the Republican party, we need to do better as a society and not allow people in power to spread lies and misinformation.
Unless there are efforts made towards truth and change in the near future, it will not only bring the death of democracy in America, but the death of the planet as well.
