The rules of time travel are never to be broken, but in the case of “The Adam Project,” these rules were gladly broken with Netflix’s newest original movie released on March 11. After being on the platform for a week, it has already risen to Netflix’s top movie.
The movie starts in the year 2050, the pilot known as Adam, played by Ryan Reynolds, races through space before creating a wormhole to the past. In the year 2022, the boy known as Adam, played by Walker Scobell, meets the older Adam and together, they embark on a journey to destroy the very thing that created time travel, The Adam Project.
“The Adam Project” was definitely a good Netflix movie. It had comedy, it had really good acting, and the story was well written. Every one of the interactions between the older Adam and the younger Adam were the highlights of the movie. It was really cool to see how they learned something new from each other, to become a better version of themselves.
The characters themselves and their relationships with each other were very complex as well. The relationship between Adam and his mother, Ellie Reed, played by Jennifer Garner, was a complicated one, but every relationship has its ups and downs. It was cool to see how both characters went through those tough parts and by the end, both mother and son had grown. Another relationship that was really cool to see, even if it was brief, was between Ellie and Adam’s father, Louis, played by Mark Ruffalo. Their relationship together was cute and it was very similar to the one seen in the 2004 rom-com “13 Going on 30.”
While “The Adam Project” had its good parts, the plot of the movie felt very basic and more suited for a younger audience. If this movie was PG instead of PG-13, the storyline would have worked a lot better. The film clearly distinguishes between good and bad, which isn’t a bad thing. By the end, every loose end was tied up and the characters lived happily ever after.
As an older audience, we expect movies and TV shows to be darker. We expect the story to have more complexity to it. We don’t expect a happy end like “The Adam Project’’ had. This film needed to be more complicated, more intricate, and it needed a lot more time to lay all the pieces together.
Although not necessarily bad, it was quite clear that “The Adam Project” was inspired by a lot of other well known movies, like “Stars Wars” for example. It wasn’t a direct influence, but one of the weapons that the older Adam uses is similar to a lightsaber. Even the younger Adam comments on it.
“The Adam Project’’ came to tell a story and it told a story. A story about learning that sometimes time travel does more damage than good. Everything about this movie was good, and it did have its flaws like every movie does. If the story had been expanded more, it could have been really good. If you are in need of a movie about time travel then “The Adam Project’’ is the one to watch.
