Evenings at the cinema sitting in padded seats that smell weird with large sodas and salty movie theater popcorn has turned into family movie nights on the couch with takeout. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced everyone to stay home, and many businesses like movie theaters had to close.
With cinemas being closed, movies have had to be released online. Shows Marvel and Disney+’s “WandaVision” as well as movies like “Soul” and “Wonder Woman 1984” all came out during quarantine. At this point, new movies are primarily available to people who have streaming services or go to drive-ins.
While many hope to be able to return to theaters, Evan Prusha, 10, hopes movies continue to be released online.
“This is probably the best course of action of how new stuff can come out right now, there’s really no alternative. Stuff should keep coming out on streaming services that are available to anyone who buys into it, which may even be a better deal than going to the movies and buying a bunch of tickets for some people,” said Prusha.
Streaming movies and TV shows have been a big way for people to pass time and keep themselves entertained. For Zac Fisher, 10, it was something to look forward to through the boredom of quarantine.
“I was able to look forward to something each week, it gave me something to be happy about. Also, it gives you something to talk about with friends other than talking about school all the time,” said Fisher.
Others miss being able to go to movie theatres in person with friends or family. They miss the experience you only get from watching movies at the theatre. Faith Martinez, 12, feels more connected when watching movies with others.
“I feel like when you’re in person, when you go and sit down at a movie theater, or if you’re at the drive-ins, I feel like you’re more connected with the people around you and it makes the experience more fun. Hearing everyone’s reaction, knowing that you’re not alone. Like if you laugh at one part and think that you’re the only one, but you hear someone from across the movie theatre and they’re laughing too. It makes you feel more connected,” said Martinez.
As of now, COVID-19 is still spreading and Santa Clara County is in lockdown. Movie theatres and other businesses are closed and will continue to be closed until the situation is less severe.
“In the future, I really hope theaters will open back up eventually, people will be able to go out and watch movies with friends, family, partners, and be able to experience things,” said Prusha.
