For the third year, creating a bit of a tradition, I watched all 33 Oscar nominated movies so I could accurately roast the Academy’s choices.
There were some snubs this year that were pretty frustrating, such as actress Celine Song and director Greta Lee from “Past Lives,” my favorite movie of 2023. Some other major ones were Leonardo DiCaprio in “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Greta Gerwig for “Barbie,” the latter of which felt more deserved than America Ferrera's Supporting Actress nomination.
I was pretty happy with the results overall, and I was most excited that “The Boy and the Heron” won Best Animated Feature which I was not expecting at all because Ghibli movies have always been overlooked. Japan also brought back another win as “Godzilla: Minus One” took home the Best Visual Effects Oscar which was well-deserved.
“Oppenheimer” was definitely the best movie of the year and director Christopher Nolan’s best. It was nominated in 13 categories and won seven, a very well-earned feat.
The Best Actress race was perhaps one of the most anticipated categories, as it was well-known that it would come down to Emma Stone and Lily Gladstone. My personal favorite out of the five was Sandra Hüller who was nominated for “Anatomy of a Fall,” but I knew she wouldn’t win. Stone went on to win this category, which was well-deserved because of just how much she did in the role.
The 96th Academy Awards was not one that was especially memorable, but it was nice to have a tame and uncontroversial show in these times.
