After the massive success of her debut album “SOUR,” Olivia Rodrigo returns after over two years to release “GUTS.” The second album of Rodrigo’s discography soon climbed the charts after its summer release, rivaling the former in its almost overnight success earning over 60 million Spotify listens in the first 24 hours.
Rodrigo dropped the new album’s first single “vampire” on June 30, which met immediate praise from the singer’s patient fans. With mounting excitement of the arrival of the new album, Rodrigo dropped her second single “bad idea right?” on Aug. 11. The anticipators of the new album did not have to wait for long for the release, which soon followed the two singles on Sept. 8.
Her single “vampire,” shares a heartbreaking story that shows Rodrigo seems to be all too familiar with subjects of betrayal. It also represents her experiences in the music industry and her own love life. The opening instrumental begins with a haunting piano reminiscent of the song's title itself, then transitions into her familiar fast-paced beat. While it is not her best track on the album, it was a good choice to get fans excited for the full release.
Following the popularity of “vampire,” Rodrigo released her second single, “bad idea right?” with a catchy upbeat anthem, exemplifying the best aspects of her past music and sound. While lyrically it is not the most interesting of her songs, it tells the story of an old flame in a creative and engaging way. The rhythms on the other hand, are an earworm and the perfect summer jam for when the song was released.
As the album was released and Rodrigo fans rushed to listen to the newest of the popstar’s songs, fans quickly took to the song “get him back!” The song pairs similar to the song “bad idea right?” but a more crazed and aggressive version of the former. The duality between the high intensity chorus and the soft manic bridge makes this song worth putting on repeat.
With Rodrigo’s singles dominating listeners, her softer songs often lose luster, however, this is not the case when it comes to “lacy.” Arguably the most underrated track on the album, “lacy” stands on its own legs lyric-wise, bringing the telltale question, “aren’t you the sweetest thing on this side of hell?” This song is a maddening story that combines two of Rodrigo’s topics in music, love and hate. The soft vocals mixed with the acoustic guitar makes this one of the more delicate songs on the album.
The musical growth that Rodrigo has displayed in the transition from “SOUR” to “GUTS” is tremendously apparent. Rodrigo has taken the best parts of her debut album; lyricism, instrumentation and vocal performances and worked to perfect them in her time away from the limelight. Longtime listeners can tell how intentional her storytelling has become, and how every action she seems to take with each song makes a difference. The “GUTS” is no doubt the better album of the two and is a physical representation of her journey as a musical artist in the industry.
“GUTS” is now available for listeners on any major streaming platform.
