While COVID-19 started to become just a distinct memory in our minds, “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” brings us back to the time of masks and starts the chaos of a new mystery. “Glass Onion” was first released in theaters for only a week on Nov. 23 and will later be released on Netflix on Dec. 23.
On March 13, 2020, the five friends of tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton), receive boxes filled with clues for the puzzles that they must solve to finally get a prize in the middle. The prize is a trip to an island in Greece for the weekend filled with fun and a murder mystery game. Among those who were invited was Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) who doesn’t know why he was invited to an island with a bunch of people he doesn’t know, but is itching to figure out this new mystery.
Compared to the previous movie “Knives Out,” “Glass Onion” had a very different plot line and story structure. Instead of a murder starting the movie, as what happened in “Knives Out,” this movie started with a box filled with clues to a party. Along with the change in start, there was almost always some new clue or twist that was weaved in throughout each scene. The best parts of any mystery is the plot twists and new mysteries that are sprinkled throughout and always find a way to creep up. It makes these kinds of movies even more exciting and worth watching.
“Glass Onion” focuses solely on a group of friends who have built themselves up together: Connecticut Governor Claire Debella (Kathryn Hahn), famous Twitch streamer Duke Cody (Dave Bautista), model Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson), scientist Lionel Toussaint (Leslie Odom Jr.), Andi Brand (Janelle Monáe) and Miles Bron. When first introduced in the beginning, these people wouldn’t seem like they’d be friends with one another, however, they all have one thing in common. They were all built up by their friend Miles Bron. The friendship dynamic between all of the characters was really interesting to watch. It was kind of similar to the first “Knives Out” where they are all connected together, but in reality they all have different agendas.
From the witty remarks to the hilarious decision making and actions of these characters, I found this movie extremely funny. Aside from the mystery itself, which is a lot more serious, the humor sprinkled throughout makes the seriousness lighten up and helps the movie flow along to the end.
The first 20 minutes of the movie brought back the first few weeks of absolute chaos the world endured at the beginning of the pandemic, it made this movie even better because of how relatable it was. This has been one of the first movies where the reality of pandemic and how it affected people of different statuses, was shown. “Glass Onion'' also brought back the popular COVID-19 game “Among Us” for a minute, which was funny to watch and reminisce in.
“Glass Onion'' was a mystery in itself. Going into the theater to watch it, you don’t know what will happen because of the new story structure, the new plot and the new set of characters. Everything throughout this movie was pulled together and flowed together nicely, creating yet another great murder mystery movie to watch in the many years to come.
“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” will be streaming on Netflix on Dec. 23.
