It’s an exciting season of alliances and turning tides for the fourth season of the hit show “Cobra Kai.” After premiering on Netflix on Dec. 31, 2021, the events of season four will leave viewers wishing for a fifth season, which is already in the works.
Coming from the cliffhanger ending of season three, “Cobra Kai” starts right where it left off, with an alliance between Johnny Laurence’s Eagle Fang Karate and Daniel LaRusso’s Miyagi-Do to take down a common enemy. As the season progresses, tension is high as the senseis of Cobra Kai, Miyagi-Do, and Eagle Fang Karate prepare their students for the All Valley Karate Tournament that will decide the fate of the dojos after the tournament and a winner is proclaimed.
A season of “Cobra Kai” wouldn’t be a season of this show without the infamous rivalry between Johnny Laurence (William Zabka) and Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), which has played a very large part in how the events of this season have played out. However, unlike other seasons, the rivalry between the two has grown, now being instigated by their jealousy of the other teaching their top students. By the end of the season, the two work out most of their differences in order to support one of their students as she try to win the All Valley Karate Tournament.
The most interesting thing about this season of “Cobra Kai” was how many of the characters have switched sides, some going to the allied dojos and some going to Cobra Kai. One of the most surprising switches was Hawk, or also known as Eli Moskowitz (Jacob Bertrand), who has had a large character arc since the beginning of the show. Hawk went from being the one bullied, to then being more confident, to being the bully, and finally, he has switched sides once again, joining another dojo and following another sensei into the All Valley Karate Tournament.
Even if some characters haven’t switched sides, other characters have grown and changed throughout this season. The best character growth seen this season was Tory Nichols (Peyton List), a Cobra Kai student since season two. Tory, as a character, has been the same since she was introduced a couple seasons before, but with the fourth season, her character starts changing. Before this season, Tory is seen as angry and aggressive towards other people, but with this season, Tory’s past actions have become more understandable, as we learn more of her story and struggles. Instead of denying other people’s help, Tory is learning to accept the help and guidance offered to her, leading her down a better path.
This whole season has been action packed, with many twists and turns to keep your head spinning. The end of fourth season has set up for an interesting season five and many more seasons to come. “Cobra Kai” has grown since it’s first season premiered and I can not wait to see how the next season will play out.
All episodes of the fourth season of “Cobra Kai” are streaming on Netflix.
