Hurricane Ian has struck Florida and has caused lasting damage to people’s homes, cars and businesses. People living in Zone A, the area struck hardest by the hurricane, were placed under a mandatory evacuation, but many were unable and unwilling to leave their entire livelihood behind and decided to stay despite the ruthless hurricane. As of Sept. 30 there was one confirmed fatality and 20 unconfirmed. This natural disaster is a reminder of how dangerous weather can be and how important it is to always be prepared.
Natural disasters have been happening since humans first populated the Earth, however their frequency has been increasing at an alarming rate. The main reason behind this: global warming.
The warm oceans are perfect breeding grounds for huge tropical storms and as the temperatures increase so will the intensity and frequency of these storms. Although for us, living in California, we are not in much danger of being hit by hurricanes, other natural disasters are more common here, such as fires.
Fires and earthquakes have been prevalent in California for the past few years. In 2022 alone, there were 6,594 fires that burned a total of 365,748 acres. As temperatures keep rising and summers get hotter and drier, the dried grass and trees will provide perfect kindling for these wildfires, making them larger and more dangerous. Although right now we are heading towards cooler weather, it is important to always have supplies prepared for any emergency. You should always have water and non-perishable food items on hand alongside a first aid kit, these supplies can save your life one day.
