When considering the biggest nuisances in day to day life, birds are often overlooked. However, on the Pioneer campus, birds are a quickly growing problem, as the pack living above the Pioneer rooftops seems to be growing exponentially. From the constant cawing to the persistent flapping of wings, no one finds the presence of seagulls pleasant. However neither of these problems are as bad as the white stains present all around campus.
Not only does it ruin the aesthetics and cleanliness of our school, but the bigger problem is that the flying feces have instilled ad eep fear in many students. The sight of seagulls is terrifying to many students. The second birds start to fly over the uncovered areas of the school, students scatter in all directions hoping to find some protection from the poop.
So many ask what can we do, how do we protect ourselves from the white goo?
Although the bistro covers that were installed a few years ago at Pioneer seem to help provide extra protection, they are not enough to stop the problem completely.
Although birds are the problem, birds can also be the solution. Specifically, falcons. A few years ago Full Circle Falconry brought in a trained falcon onto the campus to drive away the seagulls. While this worked as a temporary solution, the ferocious falcon couldn’t be kept on campus forever.
So what is the permanent solution?
Getting rid of the seagulls can be as easy as throwing away trash into a trash can rather than leaving it around campus for the birds to turn into their lunch. However this is easier said than done, as forgetting trash is often accidental and not intentional. But if everyone on campus puts in an additional effort to take a few extra seconds to place their trash into trash cans, which are often only a few feet away, then the sickening seagulls would leave Pioneer and find a new luncheon and bathroom spot.
