This year’s bell schedule has been drastically altered from previous years and I feel that it’s a step in the wrong direction. Although minor changes are often made from year to year, no change was as big as the one made this year. From the seven minute passing periods, to the finals schedule being changed, students have returned to school with a vastly different schedule.
One large change was the increase in length of passing periods, rather than having passing periods that were five minutes, like in previous years, the district decided to increase them to seven minutes long. These passing periods have been really helpful for students like me, who take forever to pack up, because it gives a lot more time in between classes.
The longer passing periods also give students more time to use the restroom in between classes so that they don’t have to use up class time. However it also makes the time when classes start and end not multiples of five which makes the schedule much harder to memorize. I end up fully relying on when the bell rings, because I never know when the period or break ends or starts. Another thing I don’t like about the longer passing periods is that it also increases the length of the school day and with many students having many activities after school and homework it makes schedules even busier.
The finals schedule was another change made this year. Rather than making the finals for zero period on a specific day, they are held during regular class times. Not only is having the final split over several days annoying for both students and teachers, but it can also add stress for an already stressful week. The school should reconsider the major changes introduced to the schedule this year as it does more harm than good.
