Ari's Advice

When the bell rings, many feel a sense of relief as the day is over, but the stress is far from over. Homework has been a common part of school as a way for teachers to reinforce lessons taught in the classroom. Coming home from class would normally signify time to relax, however, the additional work brought home causes the stress of school to continue. Currently, I am in my senior year, meaning in addition to the multitude of homework assignments and projects, college applications are also consuming my time. Along with my academics, I also volunteer, work and swim two hours a day during the school week, leaving little to no time for anything else.
As someone who has a very busy schedule, the stress of homework has been extremely overwhelming. I constantly have my head in a computer, rather than being out enjoying what the world around me has to offer. On nights when I have hours of homework on top of my extracurriculars, I have to stay up late, therefore lacking the energy to continue working the next day. Every day is a constant balancing act of keeping myself sane, performing well academically, fulfilling my interests and maintaining a social life. The pressure of the school day is already enough for students, and homework adds another layer of pressure, causing students like me to crack and break down. The added work also causes a deficit of a school-life balance for many students, which is something that I have especially experienced due to a lack of time. Teachers need to be much more aware of the additional pressure homework causes students and will hopefully take measures to decrease the load on students.
There are only twenty-four hours in the day. The balancing act is stressful and a worn-down cycle. We need to keep the pressure of academics within the classroom rather than in our outside lives.
