Three year track and field athlete Nylah Lemus, 12, has proven to be a dedicated member to the team throughout her time at Pioneer and will continue her academic and athletic career at Dominican University of California in nearby San Rafael after graduating high school.
As a hurdle jumper, Lemus has shown to her teammates, such as Kalia Villanueva, 12, how much she cares about the sport by always working to become better.
“She’s very critical of her own athletic abilities, always striving for nothing less than the best.
Nylah’s determined character just ensures her consistency,” said Villanueva.
By using knowledge that Lemus has learned, she has used this to guide the lowerclassmen since hurdlers do not have a designated hurdles coach.
“Nylah is an incredible teammate, she is very supportive and is always teaching the younger classmen proper form and how they could improve,” said Gabe Sy, 12.
Villanueva has also recognized that Lemus is always kind to other members of the team.
“Whether it’s at school or practice, Nylah never fails to exchange a simple but warm ‘hi’ with everyone she cheers for on the team,” said Villanueva.
By supporting newer track and field members Nylah has helped improve the team as a whole.
“Nylah has been a great leader and role model for the younger members of the track team. She continues to help new athletes improve their form and their speed, especially in the hurdles,” said Owen Souza, 12. “Nylah always has a positive attitude and is looking for ways to keep practice fun while also being productive.”
