On Feb. 6, MANGLEDmaw Games uploaded the demo for one of their new hit indie horror games, “Amanda The Adventurer '' on Itch.io.
The demo for “Amanda The Adventurer” takes place in a dark attic on the night of a thunderstorm. The room is surrounded by cardboard boxes, full of unused old children’s toys, collecting dust. In front of the player stands a VHS tape and a small, boxy screen with a built-in VHS player. When the tape is inserted, an interactive cartoon is played, starring a young girl named Amanda and a sheep named Wooly. In this cartoon, Amanda suggests that they make a pie together, despite Wooly suggesting they shouldn’t because her parents aren’t around.
As the game progresses, the player gets to interact with the cartoon by using their keyboard to type in responses to Amanda’s questions and some of the answers even lead to secret responses. Once the cartoon ends, an oven suddenly appears behind the player, along with some fruit and a pie tin. Here, the player must replicate the recipe shown in the cartoon. If they do so, they’ll receive another VHS tape, containing a secret message from Wooly asking the player for help. After the video is played, the player turns around to see the attic hatch open up by itself, followed by a horrifying scream.
The atmosphere is a great factor of this game and keeps the player on their toes. The gritty dark colors of the attic amp up the horror of the atmosphere and make the player focus on the contrastingly bright screen in front of them. With a mixture of eerie ambiance and anticipation, the atmosphere for this demo was amazingly off putting.
Another favorable aspect of the game is the aesthetic. When the adorable art style contrasts with Amanda’s unsettling dialogue, an uncanny feeling hits the player. The cutesy characters, in contrast to the underlying horror, is a fun dynamic MANGLEDmaw expanded upon.
Overall, the “Amanda The Adventurer” demo is well-executed and leaves the player excited for the full game’s release. The dimly lit, cluttered mess in the attic, along with the stormy night sky make the atmosphere dark and frightening. The gameplay is enticing and fills the player with anticipation for what they think will happen next.
The demo for “Amanda The Adventurer” is now on Itch.io and will be released on Steam sometime this spring.
