A Printed Tribute to Our Past Staff

I will never forget the first time I saw my name in news print. Even after years of seeing it in middle and high school yearbooks, in 1999 I had my first byline in the Chico State paper “The Orion,” and it changed my life. Even after almost three years of college papers, and four years of professional newspapers, I never got over the thrill of seeing my name at the top of a story, in grimy gray and black ink.
I used to smile every time I saw my college peers or members of the communities I covered holding a copy of my newspaper, or when a city council member held up an issue I had worked on during discussions.
My hope is that our Pioneer journalists feel the same thrill, and I hope that my journalists from last year are as proud of the work they produced remotely as I am. But even though we created some of the best journalism we’ve ever had at this school, tackled challenging issues and help record the year of events, one thing our staff never saw was their work in actual print.
So, to that end, at the suggested of Editor-in-Chief Ethan Percival, we’ve decided, this month, to also print a staff box for last year, to honor, in print, the hard work of the staff of the Pony Express for the 2020-2021 school year.
Under the guidance of our incredible Editor in Chief Kat Rowe, the editorial board, seniors Riley Fink in entertainment, Selena Ganguly in features and Joelle Gendzel in news, along with now-junior Sydney Teves, spent hours in breakout rooms with their writers, training them, developing
their skills and helping tell the challenging stories that last year brought to us.
Those writers, freshmen Patty Carmona Hernandez, Jocelyn Cosgrove, Saya Fujii, Isabella Klawitter and Gabby Vasquez Del Mercado, sophomores Abigail Shlimenzon, Jace Szarlacki and Isabella Wight, juniors Tyler Lilly and Ethan Percival and our long-distance senior Marilyn Weaver, who wrote her stories from the beaches of Southern California, worked long hours on Google Drive, covering issues on and off campus, tracking down sources via email,
social media and phones, to bring you the stories of the year.
Those amazing reporters and editors never saw a hard copy of the work they produced, but I hope that this tribute, and their names here in print, stands as a
testament to their dedication to this school. Thank you all for your hard work, you are forever a part of the Pioneer publication
family and the colorful P6 ceiling.
