On Oct. 26, the Glue Factory, in association with Pioneer’s Advanced Drama class, performed their opening night performance of Meredith Wilson’s “The Music Man” for friends, family and others who wished to watch this year’s fall musical.

Winning the lottery would be a dream come true for most people. That dream was granted for one local on Friday night’s Mega Millions drawing on Oct. 14. The draw had a total jackpot of almost $500 million dollars, split between two winners, one of whom purchased their ticket at the Kooser Road 7-Eleven, located down the street from Pioneer.

Many new policies, such as Social Emotional Learning, have been implemented this year with the goal of improving the school environment, the quality of education and the safety of students at Pioneer. The Climate Committee is a program that has been around for many years and focuses on these topics.

As we enter the last grading period of the semester, teachers on campus have been growing concerned with the number of students leaving campus during FLEX and lunch. Pioneer High School is a closed campus. However, this rule is commonly broken by many students due to its lack of enforcement. Since the science wing has the closest classrooms to the corner of Mustang Way, multiple science teachers, such as physics teacher Colleen McDonough, have seen students leaving campus without permission.

On Oct. 12, at approximately 10:55 a.m., Abraham Lincoln High School received a call stating that an active shooter was threatening students. This turned out to be a part of a recent trend called “swatting,” where fake threat calls are made, often resulting in police responses as if a shooter were on site.

Zero period is a period of students and teachers who begin school before the start of the instructional day. Students who take zero period may have the opportunity to get out earlier, after fourth or fifth period, but still be in school for the same amount of time as other students. However, zero period students and teachers end up being in school for additional hours.

Although Pioneer has always been a school that focuses on social aspects of learning such as volunteering and mental health, this year especially there has been a sharp rise in the amount of new programs dedicated to improving students’ mental health. Programs such as Social Emotional Learning were permanently implemented and others, such as Breaking Down the Walls, returned to campus after the pandemic.
