On the TL

It’s the time of year again where Christmas music is played on repeat and it’s even harder to park in malls. The other staple of this time of year is that the awards come out and I felt extra disappointed this year. The Grammys have had a long history of snuffing artists and picking the safe choice, but this year I expected more. One of the only good things to come out since the pandemic has been the music. There was a lot of raw vulnerability that came out in music this year that has been amazing, but very little of this was highlighted in the Grammys. Instead the nominations went to generic tracks with bland lyrics and endless radio replayability. Take the best songs of the year - this list is basically just the year’s most played songs. This stuff is decent, but it is not groundbreaking like other songs have come out this year and some of the picks are downright insulting. Then there are the artists I feel quite a few were down-right snuffed this year, the chief among them being the band The Offspring who have been pumping out amazing music since 1988, but have still yet to be nominated. Their newest album, “Let The Bad Times Roll,” is among their best and still garnerd no attention from the academy. In the end, I think this whole thing shows the dichotomy between the music industry and most actual consumers because many people are not happy with the choices. So the Grammys either need to do better, or fade into irrelevance.
