With the start of a new season, the football team is hoping to come back stronger than ever and make it to playoffs for the second consecutive year.
Last year, their goal to progress past playoffs was hindered by their large amount of injuries, but head coach Eric Perry feels that this lineup of players gives them a better chance for a more successful season.
“If we can stay healthy, I like our chances. Last year we got rocked with injuries,” Perry said
In addition to commenting on the physical aspect of the sport, Perry has seen an improvement with attitude as well.
“We’ve got guys that want to be there, and that are part of the team and excited to do what we want to do, so it makes it a lot more fun.”
The team has been using the weight room that was created last fall to do more strengthening over the summer and through last year, so they feel that they will be tougher against competition during league games and also be able to advance further in CCS.
Captain Jared Kennedy, 12, also felt that this training better prepared the athletes to make sure that they were in good shape to play and also prepared them for the psychological aspect of the game.
“The weight room has definitely helped us be stronger mentally and physically. It’s a huge part of the offseason,” Kennedy said.
He also added that the team has gotten better at stepping up after an injury occurs and getting back in the game.
“Injuries have been huge this year, so when coach says ‘next man up,’ you have to be ready when your number is called.”
Though the beginning of their season may not be as explosive as hoped for, they feel that later on, they will be able to win more games and accumulate more leads.
Overall, players are enthusiastic for this season and believe that they can improve this year and be a stronger team. They are confident in their players and their ability to advance, noted Freddy Valencia, 11, who emphasized the incredible experience that a playoff game provides which he feels is in their reach for another year.
“I’m really looking forward to getting back to that playoff game,” Valencia said. “I feel like we have the team to do that, as long as we all do our jobs and work together.”
With these dreams, they are planning to work hard throughout the season, along with striving to prevent injuries in both the league and postseason. Their next home game will be against Santa Teresa High School on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.
