Sydney's Skills

I’ve been doing gymnastics since I was three years old and I love it. I love the connections that I’ve made with people through gymnastics and how much more confident it’s made me. I feel like if I didn’t start gymnastics when I did, I would have ended up playing another sport that I may or may not have enjoyed, and I would’ve been a really shy person.
Like many other things this year, gymnastics was cancelled for a bit. It wasn’t completely ruined though, which I’m very grateful for because I probably would have gone crazy without it. When we weren’t allowed to be at the gym, we did workouts over Zoom a few times a week and once we were allowed to be at the gym, we were outside of the gym wearing masks and were six feet apart the whole time.
What I was most upset about though was that we didn’t have a season because I was really looking forward to this season. Last year I severely sprained my ankle right before our second meet, so I was only able to compete in one meet that season but I was however able to watch my teammates compete and cheer them on from the side. That didn’t last long either though because when COVID-19 started, the last four meets were cancelled.
This season was supposed to be the best season so far because I would have been able to go to regionals after states, which would have been my first regionals ever and first state meet in two years.
I was really disappointed about not being able to compete in all the meets this year because I only have two years left of gymnastics. Since I’m on the XCEL team I have to leave once I graduate high school and I’m not planning on doing gymnastics in college so I really want the last two years to be better than this one.
I’m still pretty lucky to have two years left though because some of the girls on the team are seniors this year and their last two seasons were ruined.
Although this season didn’t didn’t go as planned, I enjoyed doing something different. I do hope that next year will be back to normal though and that we’ll be able to actually compete. For now, I’m just glad to be back in the gym working on getting my strength back.
