On Oct. 17 at 7 p.m., the music program performed at their annual Fall Preview Concert, setting the tone for the rest of the year. As their first concert, it serves to fundraise through donations and gives students another opportunity to perform for family and friends.
Music director Laura Levy decided to utilize the concert as a recruitment event as well as a showcase, extending an offer to Castillero Middle School’s music department.
“This year we invited Castillero to come play with us so it was a big joint concert. It starts getting Castillero interested in what we’re doing here,” said Levy. “Our upper ensembles usually need to do something in between the beginning of the year and December so we schedule a concert in October as a warm up preview.”
As the year progresses, Levy and her students aim to develop the program further. Ruby Ibañez, 11, plays bass clarinet in Wind Ensemble and looks forward to improving through performing.
“Our goal is to continue to improve at our instruments because it is important to sharpen our skills and grow as players,” said Ibañez. “We are lucky to have (a music program) where we can explore our musical talents and perform pieces that can bring joy.”
Trumpet player Adrian Flores, 10, looks forward to success both independently and as a group.
“The main goal was to raise awareness for people to know what we can do as a band, how good we are and how much we can improve,” said Flores. “We’re all good musicians individually but together, we can be a lot better.”
Levy hopes to see the program continue to grow through the end of the semester.
“Music is a gift you can share with your audience,” said Levy. “It’s nice to be able to share what we’ve succeeded and put together with audience members, other students and their families. Every year has gotten better, I’m really pleased with the trajectory of things.”
The music department will take the stage next for their winter concert on Dec. 11 and 12 at 7 p.m. in the PAC.
