This year, the girls’ volleyball team is looking forward to a season full of improvement and growth with a younger and larger group of players.
With a more substantial lineup, there are often difficulties with the distribution of playing time, but players are optimistic that their relationship and their drive will allow them to see success through the season, hopefully leading them towards the league championships.
Team captain, Alysia Yllan, 11, feels that the players have a strong bond and can use this to their advantage, while also working on refining their skill set.
“I’m looking forward to seeing how much we improve,” Yllan said. “The team connects really well and we all have a good dynamic when we play together.”
She also felt that the younger players would allow them to grow more as well, as some would have less experience, and playing more will allow them to gain a better understanding of the game.
This also makes the coaching process easier, according to their head coach Tony Lien, because the players are willing to work harder and put in the practice to get their skills to where they need to be in order to have a competitive season. He believes that if they strive for improvement, they will be able to play at their best every game, allowing them to build a stronger dynamic with each other.
“I’m really excited for this team. They’re a great group of kids and a great team to work with, a lot of talent and kids that work hard and want to strive to do their best,” Lien said. “It’s about seeing them come together in a united effort to do really cool things.”
He also emphasized that not only will the individual students’ practice pay off, but teamwork will also benefit the group and help them to do more tasks that cannot be accomplished by just an individual but as a whole.
The team is enthusiastic about this season and believe that they can go far with their increased amount of players. Josée LaPierre, 12, felt that this addition of athletes would allow them to grow more and has already been helping with their play style.
“I could definitely see us winning league champs,” LaPierre said. “We have played a lot of preseason games and gone really far and done what we had to do to win.”
With these new goals for this season, they are prepared to put in the work necessary to reach a competitive playing level to have much success this season and in the postseason as well. Their next game will be at Pioneer on Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. against Sobrato High School.
