Imagine this scenario for a moment: schoolwork is impossible and stress is taking over. As the sun falls behind the mountains, sleepiness strikes you. Although your school work is vital for tomorrow’s exam, you’re barely functioning.
In this urgent situation, you decide to play something random on Spotify, not knowing what’s going to come on. “No One Like You” by Scorpions starts playing.
Immediately, the opening guitar riff strikes your soul, invoking a powerful feeling from within. Every last element, a cinematic masterpiece. Like you’ve reached the apex of Mount Everest. Sleep subsides while the music continues. What was once a challenging assignment suddenly becomes much more manageable.
This trend continues as other classics play. From the riveting “Pour Some Sugar on Me” by Def Leppard, to Van Halen’s exhilarating song “Panama,” to the melodic master-class “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin, each one is absolutely outstanding. A seemingly-hard test ends up being easy, with your music preventing absolute failure.
Simply based on experience, I can confidently say that listening to classic rock has aided me during some of the most challenging experiences of my life. Whenever I’m depressed or overwhelmed in the darkest of times, it’s been a perfect cure, as opposed to bad medicine. Just something about turning on a comforting rock tune such as, “Hotel California” by the Eagles, allows me to escape a merciless reality and erase all of my problems. Compared to most of the plastic, manufactured dribble that’s sometimes released nowadays, rock of the ‘70s to ’90s sounds authentic and well-crafted. In a modern age where plenty of music comes off as artificially and haphazardly produced, something that feels genuine is super refreshing whenever I’m looking for a great song.
One may argue that most rock music incorporates identical instruments, and aren’t exactly unique. While this might apply in some cases, a lot of classic, praised bands use their own unique style, allowing them to stand out from everyone else. For instance, Nirvana’s lead vocalist Kurt Cobain possesses a powerful, distinct voice that instantly makes their catalog recognizable to even the most casual rock listeners. Moreover, Van Halen’s electric, outstanding guitar riffs from the late Eddie Van Halen create a fantastic sound for countless generations to remember. No other musical genre can quite encapsulate the authentically powerful feelings through their sound, and lyrics like classic rock could. ‘70s to ‘90s rock music puts all other genres to shame in comparison.
