Riley Reviews: Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Since last year’s release of Super Smash Bros Ultimate, the landmark fighting game for the Nintendo Switch has smashed through previous records, becoming the highest sold fighting game of all time to match its numerous awards. Taking advantage of this fame, Nintendo have been continuously adding new fighters via downloadable content as a part of their $25 Fighters Pass.
The additional fighters seem to be focused on characters from series not previously represented in Smash. Joker from Persona 5 was released on April 17, Hero from Dragon Quest on July 30, Banjo and Kazooie, from a game of their name, were released on Sept. 4 and Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury dropped on Nov. 6.
In terms of competitive viability, something Smash Bros has struggled with in the past, the characters are some of the best when played at a high level, with the one exception being Hero, who mainly relies on random chance for his entire playstyle, making him more fun to watch than to play on the big stage.
The design of each of the characters is top notch, too. They all have quirky gimmicks that make their playstyle unique when compared to the main roster like Joker’s Arsene, Hero’s MP meter, Banjo’s gold feathers and Terry’s supers. Each of these individual mechanics diversify the DLC characters from the rest of the roster and make their moment-to-moment gameplay way more fun.
Nintendo recently announced they will continue to add more after the end of the 5 character Fighter’s Pass. There’s one spot left in the pass, leaving Nintendo fans everywhere continuing to speculate on whom it will be, alongside who and how many they will add after its conclusion.
