Negrete or Not

In 1987, March was declared Women’s History Month, becoming a celebration and recognition of women and all that they do. As time went on, the month started to get less attention and the intentional meaning became lost to societal expectations, double standards and the fear of losing more rights.
On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, which protected the right for women to have abortions. When I first learned about this I was scared, and I’m sure many other women in America were as well. Luckily, California protected the right for abortions, however other states like Missouri, did not.
Having your state go against your rights can make some lose hope, however, musician Olivia Rodrigo created a “Fund 4 Good” charity to support reproductive rights. Many of the proceeds from her “GUTS” world tour help to fund this organization. Recently, at her concert in St. Louis, she provided free Plan B contraceptive pills, condoms and abortion resources. I was actually really glad that this well-known artist, who has girls of all ages looking up to her, is standing up for women’s rights.
I think it is important to have a month dedicated to celebrating women, however, women should be celebrated every day, no matter the month. Women are important to our society every day since they are our mothers, sisters, aunts, coworkers, bosses and almost everything around us. During Women's History Month I feel that it is an important time for us to stand up for women's rights, because if we don't, then who will?
