2022 will be an exciting time for new movies and TV shows alike. Over the past two years, the pandemic has kept movies from premiering in theaters, but since last summer, many movies were starting to be released in theaters once again.
After being closed for a year, California movie theaters officially reopened on April 15, 2021, releasing 82 movies throughout the rest of the year. Like last year, it will be another year full of new movies, with 94 movies scheduled to be released throughout the rest of the year. As of Jan. 7, “The 355” was released, the first movie released nationwide in 2022.
As February starts, excitement for the many movies being released this year is high, as more and more trailers come out. Out of all the movies being released this year, Kenzie Hill, 11, is most excited for many new movies, including “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Thor: Love and Thunder,” and what they will bring to the Marvel universe.
“I’m really excited to see Shuri step into more of a lead role in Black Panther, maybe even take on the mantle of the Black Panther like in the comics. For Doctor Strange, there’s literally so much that could happen, but I’m excited to see the Strange/Wanda team up,” said Hill. “For “Thor: Love and Thunder” it’s gonna be sick to finally see Valkyrie become the queen of Asgard, and see Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster step up as female Thor.”
While there are many Marvel movies and TV shows being released this year, it isn’t the only source for new content. Continuing the series for their third movie, “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,” will be making it’s long awaited appearance on April 15. Saya Fujii, 10, a Harry Potter fan, is very excited for the release of the new Fantastic Beasts film and for what questions left from the last film it might answer.
“I know that the Fantastic Beasts movies are heading more toward the story of Dumbledore and Grindelwald and taking the spotlight from Newt. So I think the new movie will focus on Grindelwald more,” said Fujii. “I think some of the questions it will answer are: is he lying about Aurelius Dumbledore, how is Professor McGonagall in this time period, and is Ariana Dumbledore an obscurus?”
Despite so many movies being released in theaters, there were many more TV shows released on streaming services. Out of all the new shows coming out this year, Kolby Bauman, 11, is most excited for the second season of “Euphoria” streaming on HBO Max.
“I’m super excited for the remainder of the season. It has a lot of suspense and I liked all of the plot twists throughout the first season, so I’m curious to see what season 2 has to come,” said Bauman.
Sometimes the best movies of a previous year are the ones that come out at the last minute, which is the case for Luca Maccioni, 12, who felt his favorite movie of last year was “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
“They brought all the old characters in from the other Spider-Man trilogies and I got to watch it with my friend, Luke,” said Maccioni.
There is a lot of excitement for the many movies being released this year, especially movies that have been pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Like last year, 2022 will see many packed theaters of viewers trying to get a glimpse of the different movies that will be released as the year goes on. With each new movie coming out, many new theories will be speculated, many questions will be given answers, and many more questions will be asked about what will happen next.
