Nintendo’s new remaster of its 2016 Mii-centered 3DS RPG, Miitopia, lives up to and is even better than the original. With it’s amazing customization, fun and quirky gameplay, and cute design, it’s definitely a game worth trying out.
In Miitopia, players are sent on a quest to stop the Dark Lord from stealing everyone’s faces.
The core gameplay is turn-based and uses Miis as characters. A Mii is a customizable avatar used in Nintendo consoles. The player is able to create their own Miis and assign them to whatever role they want in the story. Players can add whoever they want to their party and choose their Mii’s job and personality.
There are some differences between the 3DS and Switch versions besides cosmetic ones. They added horses, which Miis are able to build relationships with in order to unlock combat abilities for them. Makeup and wigs were also added to the game, which adds a whole new level to Mii customization, allowing players to make their favorite characters or celebrities with stunning accuracy.
As someone who’s never played the original, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’m also not usually into turn-based RPGs, so I thought I would get bored pretty quickly. I was surprised at how fun it was. As the game progressed it only got more fun, and the combat didn’t feel tedious at all, though I could see how it could become repetitive after you’ve unlocked everything you can unlock. The interactions between the characters were cute, funny, and added a lot to the experience. Building relationships between Miis unlocks new interactions and special abilities usable in battle. For example, a Mii could sacrifice themselves to save another Mii in a tight situation to help the party win the battle.
The game is also able to successfully set the scene with good music and interesting scenery. The different locations in the game are pretty and unique from each other, and the map only gets more impressive as you go along. The music also fits perfectly with every situation you face and adds to the experience.
Overall, Miitopia is a funny and energizing game that provides a fun distraction from our boring and sometimes stressful daily lives. I’d recommend it to anyone who is looking for something new to play. It’s worth at least playing through the demo.
You can get Miitopia on the Nintendo Switch for $49.99 on May 21.
