“M3GAN,” the horror-thriller movie about a robot doll going haywire after finding out what death is, was released Jan. 6 and critics have given it positive reviews.
The story follows a struggling toy designer named Gemma (Allison Williams), who takes custody of her niece, Cady (Violet Mcgraw), after her parents die in a car accident. When Gemma takes in her niece, their relationship is distant until Gemma shows Cady the motion controlled robot, Bruce. After this interaction, Gemma is inspired to finish building the prototype of the “Model 3 Generative Android," M3GAN (Jenna Davis and Amie Donald), a robotic doll programmed to recognize emotions and learn from the world around her. When Gemma introduces Cady to M3GAN, the two begin to bond. Things begin to spiral when M3GAN learns what death is, making her form an obsession with Cady. This obsession leads to M3GAN using physical violence to protect Cady from any form of harm, even emotional.
The acting was realistic and allowed the audience to understand each of the different characters and their emotions. A scene with great acting is when M3GAN comforts Cady about the loss of her parents. Mcgaw’s slumped posture, along with the weary sorrow in her voice conveyed Cady’s emotions to the audience accurately. Overall, the actors did an amazing job at conveying the character’s emotions.
The complex dynamic between Gemma, Cady and M3GAN was engaging. When Gemma tries to tell Cady that M3GAN could be a danger to those around her, Cady’s love for the robotic doll is unmoved, causing their familial relationship to become more strained than it was before. Gemma having to choose between letting M3GAN go on a murder spree or risking her relationship with her niece was interesting to watch, and allowed the audience to empathize with Gemma. Overall, the character dynamics were interesting, heartfelt and made the movie worth watching.
Despite the pros of this movie, it did have its cons. Even though this movie is categorized as horror, there was a slight lack of frightening scenes. There was an overuse of jumpscares that made the horror feel repetitive and unsurprising. Although this movie’s horror was eye catching, it wasn’t exactly fear inducing.
Overall, “M3GAN” pulled through. The plot, realistic character dynamics and amazing acting all made the movie worth watching. I recommend this movie to people who love suspense.
“M3GAN” is currently available on Amazon Prime, Apple TV and playing in theaters.
