From phones to sweaters to Hydro Flasks, people lose personal items everyday on campus. The lost and found is a designated place where all these items are stored, however many students on the Pioneer campus are unaware of its existence.
“We have a lost and found?” said Isra Shaik, 9.
Another student expressed the same confusion.
“Since when have we had a lost and found?” said Ruby Ramirez, 9.
Clerical office assistant for student services Karla Maldonado, who looks after the lost and found, said there is a slow trickle of items every week.
“It varies, I wouldn’t say it’s every single day but every other day there is like one to three items that get passed around,” said Maldonado.
Not only is there a school-wide lost and found, but teachers often keep their own lost and found areas for their classrooms.
“I keep a lost and found in my classroom,” said math teacher Whitney Goodman. “I keep everything in the lost and found and I label it, and I keep it all in my room.”
Other teachers turn the items left behind in their classroom into the school lost and found.
“I have turned a bunch of stuff into the lost and found, like backpacks, books andphones,” said Andrew Castaneda, English and ELD teacher.
Maldonado said Pioneer students show a lot of honesty by turning in expensive items instead of keeping them.
“It’s between staff and students. I’m really surprised at students because sometimes it’s AirPods or phones and you know it’s rare that people bring that back so I’m really glad that Pioneer students have done that. They come in and turn it in instead of keeping it,” said Maldonado.
Although some items are claimed from the lost and found, many things remain for long periods of time. The most common items that are often left in the lost and found unclaimed are Hydro Flasks.
“I have an impressive collection of Hydro Flasks, like I have one in every color now,” said Maldonado.
Clothes, such as pants and shoes, are more uncommon, but once placed in the lost and found, they usually remain for extended periods of time. The school often donates items that are left at the end of the year, although they try to find the proper owners as much as possible.
“A pair of pants, like jeans and stuff like that or shoes are in the lost and found which is really weird too because I’m thinking people would come and pick uptheir shoes,” said Maldonado.
The coronavirus has affected many protocols on campus, the lost and found being one of them. Maldonado said how she cleans some objects in order to help prevent further spread of COVID-19 and other illnesses.
“I do try to disinfect items, it’s kind of hard with clothing but with water bottles or little trinkets, phones and airpods I do try to spray them with disinfectant then I store them inthis cabinet I have here,” said Maldonado.
Only a few students are aware of the existence of the lost and found at Pioneer, and often students will lose something and only check the lost and found immediately after, before the item is turned in, leaving behind piles of lost items to sit in wait for their owners. If you’ve lost something, head to the student services to possibly reconnect with your lost items.
