Pixar is a name we are all familiar with, as it belongs to the animation studio that created some of the most iconic kids movies such as “Toy Story,” “Cars” and “Finding Nemo.” Now, with the new documentary series, “Inside Pixar,” we get a chance to see what happens inside the studio, and where all the inspirations and creativity come from.
I am personally into animation and movie making, so I was very interested in seeing what happens at Pixar, and the steps it takes to make a full animated movie. So far, there are only five episodes, each focused on a Pixar employee and their job in production. I was expecting the structure to focus more on the general production, so I was surprised but kept watching to see what kinds of things I would get to see and know about Pixar. Still, it wasn’t as fascinating as I hoped, and I didn’t get to see much of how everything works at the studio, just more personal stories about people who work there and how they found inspiration for certain movies.
Each episode introduces someone new and each person is very different with their own backstories and roles, and their methods of coming up with ideas. For example, in episode five we are introduced to “Monsters University” and “Onward” director Dan Scanlon. We learn about his childhood and how he grew up drawing all the time, and also get to see how he comes up with ideas and what he struggles with, as well as creating characters that represent him. It’s pretty interesting to see how they put themselves into characters they create, and how they brainstorm stories and ideas.
However, I wish it showed the whole system and flow of the animating and movie creating process, because it would give a better sense of how everything works at Pixar, while still learning about individual employees It would have been great to be able to learn more about the overall flow of a day at Pixar, instead of the same format every episode.
If you are interested in seeing how employees at Pixar work to come up with incredible movies, then you will probably enjoy “Inside Pixar” and learn a lot. Personally I think it gets a bit bland and might be boring if you’re not interested in the field.
It doesn’t have most of what I was hoping to see, and it took a different perspective than I had hoped, so I can’t really recommend it to the average person. On the other hand, if you’re a creative person like me who wants to learn more about what it takes to create an animated movie, “Inside Pixar” might be something you want to try watching.
“Inside Pixar” is available to watch on Disney+.
