One of the most anticipated Marvel movies, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” came out globally in movie theaters on May 5, written and directed by James Gunn. This film is the most recent installment from Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and was held to high expectations by fans and avid movie watchers alike. This is the final “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie, so fans patiently awaited to see how the final adventure of the beloved characters would go since it would be the last time they made the big screen.
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” includes the core group of characters, Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), Groot (Vin Diesel), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Drax (Dave Bautista), Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Kraglin (Sean Gunn).
The trailer takes a look into the characters’ backstories, especially Rocket’s. This is held true in the movie, where we get a glimpse on how he was created by the villainous High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji) and the circumstances under which he grew up. We see the other animals and experiments Rocket was placed in such as Lylla (Linda Cardellini), Teefs (Asim Chaudhry) and Floor (Mikaela Hoover).
Along with seeing Rocket's backstory, the Guardians, especially Peter Quill, have to face the loss of the Gamora they knew and having to save the universe from the newest horrific villain in space.
Along with the main cast, we also are introduced to a new set of characters such as cosmic golden god Adam Warlock (Will Poulter), The High Evolutionary and Cosmo (Maria Bakalova).
This movie takes us to new and familiar places in the Marvel cosmos, such as different worlds that are parallels to ones we have seen before. There are many callbacks to previous “Guardians of the Galaxy” films and specials along with other films in the Marvel franchise. The film is the perfect mix of the new and the familiar, especially for the people who have been fans of this franchise for a long time.
When I saw this film, I was not expecting to have the reaction I did. As an avid fan of the franchise, and Marvel itself, I was expecting to walk out of this movie feeling happy and a bit nostalgic. But I walked out of the theater an emotional mess, rethinking all the Marvel movies I have seen before.
This last installment of the trilogy deals with many important topics such as trauma, loss, disagreements and dealing with the future in a very interesting way. These topics are not what immediately comes to mind when deciding to watch a Marvel movie, but Gunn was able to deal with these topics in a very serious way, with added comedy to make some scenes more lighthearted. Scenes like these made moviegoers such as myself incredibly emotional, but in a good way.
The dialogue that is in this movie is very well written, from heart-wrenching scenes to moments that made me laugh excessively. This movie incorporates dialogue that is made to keep audience members entertained and waiting for more.
I loved seeing the audience’s reaction when something happened and laughing after seeing an emotional scene.
Needless to say, this movie has something that everyone will enjoy even if you do not love Marvel, as Gunn was able to incorporate aspects into the film that everyone is able to enjoy. Another highlight of the film is the movie's soundtrack because it shows a mix of old songs that were shown in previous “Guardians of the Galaxy” movies along with some new ones, which flawlessly emphasizes the emotions that are being portrayed on screen.
Overall, this movie was very good, and I personally think it will be one of the best Marvel movies of phase five of the Marvel franchise. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” not only spotlights each character but also does an amazing job in wrapping up their storyline. I will definitely be rewatching this movie soon.
