Finally playing in front of full audiences for the first time in almost two years, the Pioneer football team gave their fans something to cheer loudly about, roaring back this season to the top of the standings.
The Mustangs won their Blossom Valley Athletic League division after going undefeated in league games, including massive wins against Sobrato, Branham and Willow Glen High Schools. The team also racked up 1329 passing yards along the way. Unfortunately, their season ended after a close, multi-overtime 42-45 loss to Santa Teresa High School.
Brady Montgomery, 9, wide receiver and defensive back enjoyed the dynamic of the team and the team spirit throughout the games.
“It was great just having your friends and family support you just makes it so much better, just makes you work harder and practice and makes you wanna go out there and show off for everyone watching on Friday nights,” said Montgomery.
Having played football for over a decade, Michael Newington, 12, inside linebacker and receiver, was extremely pleased with the win against Willow Glen that he says the team has been working towards for months.
“The best moment of the season has to be winning league against Willow Glen. All the hard work we all put in led up to that moment and it felt amazing to finally have reached what we had been aiming to do since summer,” said Newington. “Being able to actually get there and know we did it felt amazing.”
Head Coach Eric Perry was also happy with how the season went and looks forward to next year.
“We went into this year to win the season, we knew in order to win the division we had to beat Leigh, Branham, and Sobrato. I’ve been doing this 25 years, I know we had it in us to win the league championship,” said Perry. “Seniors have worked really hard to put Pioneer football back on top. I’m looking forward to what the juniors can do next year.”
