Two years after the release of “Enola Holmes,” the sequel “Enola Holmes 2” was released on Netflix on Nov. 4. The new original movie brings back the era of 1880s London and the famous legacy of fictional detective Sherlock Holmes.
After finding her mother and helping Viscount Tewkesbury, played by Louis Partridge, escape death and establish himself as a lord, Enola Holmes, played by Millie Bobby Brown, the sister of Sherlock Holmes, opens her own detective agency, but after being turned down countless times, she decides to close. One night, she gets a visit from a young girl named Bessie, played by Serrana Su-Ling Bliss, who asks Enola to help find her sister Sarah Chapman, played by Hannah Dodd, who had gone missing a week earlier. Enola takes the case, but soon realizes she won’t be able to solve this mystery by herself, especially since her case and her brother Sherlock’s, played by Henry Cavill, case is intertwined.
There have been many Netflix originals that were released this year that did not meet my initial expectations like “The School for Good and Evil,” the fifth season of “Cobra Kai,” “The Adam Project” and “Love and Gelato,” however this movie hit home. “Enola Holmes 2” brings a very intricate story to life and as expected from a detective mystery, there are many plot twists within this movie that have been executed perfectly.
Like the first movie, “Enola Holmes 2” focuses a lot on an independent woman in a time period where they are thought and expected to be silent, married members of society that don’t have a voice in government. Enola is a character who goes against society’s views of how a woman should act during this time period. She is a woman who fights, speaks her mind, and is independent and a detective in her own right. She is a character that young girls can look up to and be inspired by. I believe that there is a need for more movies to have female characters like Enola Holmes, who defy society’s expectations on what a woman should be.
The only thing that could've improved the movie was the relationship between Enola and Tewkesbury. At the end of the first movie, it is hinted that Tewkesbury has feelings for Enola, but she turns him down because she wanted to establish herself as a young, independent woman. In this film, when they see each other again, their interaction is very awkward, initially, which is understandable. Throughout the rest of the movie, Enola is debating whether or not to do anything about her own feelings for Tewksbury, however before the final conflict and the reveal of the villain, both make the long-awaited decision to confess. The build-up to this moment was very disappointing and unfulfilling in my opinion and the writing for their relationship felt awkward and rushed since there wasn’t enough time in this movie to show how much more their relationship grows to new heights.
All in all, “Enola Holmes 2” was a very enjoyable film to watch. The different misleads and plot twists intertwined with the storyline has made this movie one of the best I’ve seen in a while.
“Enola Holmes 2” is currently streaming on Netflix.
