After the initial box office success of “Dune: Part One,” “Dune: Part Two” packs an even bigger punch than the first movie.
Based on the successful science fiction book series by Frank Herbert, “Dune: Part Two” resumes the story of Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) after the Harkonnens attacked and killed the Atreides that lived on the planet Arrakis. Now Paul joins the Fremen, the native people of Arrakis, to free them from the control of the Harkonnens and get his revenge on the people who killed his father, the late Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Issac).
There is a more in-depth look into the character of Paul than in the first movie which was nice to see as “Dune: Part One” was mostly focused on the relationship between Leto and Paul. We get to see Paul’s mindset, how he tries to fit in with the Fremen, and how his plan for revenge affects the other parts of his life.
This is an improvement on the first “Dune” with this one having more action and better backstory into the other characters who were underdeveloped in the first movie. The sandworms also have a much bigger part in this movie than the first installment which is always great to see. The villains from this second movie also get more detail and better dialogue than before, as we get to see how their society works, how they fight against Paul and see more of their despicable actions towards the people of Arrakis.
All around, this sequel is more intricate and entertaining than the first movie with character arcs, action and detail of the characters being expanded on. But that doesn’t mean it's flawless. There are parts in the movie where it’s obvious what is about to happen. There are scenes that feel too fast or too slow, and some with stereotypical storylines seen in other movies. With the almost three-hour runtime, these faults can affect the movie greatly by sidetracking to plot points that don’t add to the main storyline. The stereotypical storylines impacted the movie throughout most of the runtime, but some of the uninteresting scenes are easily forgotten with how great the action is.
The actors in this movie give a better performance than the prior movie which also makes these predictable storylines and boring scenes forgivable.
The music for the movie is very grand and high-quality, making high action battle scenes and ones with more feeling to them, have even more emotion and are much better in general.
In the end, this movie is a definite improvement from “Dune: Part One.” With better performances by the actors, more action and better detail to the characters, the movie is a fun watch. Even with its flaws, the action and other scenes in the movie help it get through and become one of the great films in 2024.
“Dune: Part Two” is currently playing in theaters.
