“Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves'' was recently released on March 31 and is the perfect film for fans of medieval fantasy adventures.
The movie is about a group of thieves, Edgin (Chris Pine), Holga (Michelle Rodriguez), Simon (Justice Smith) and Doric (Sophia Lillis) banding together to retrieve Edgin’s daughter, Kira (Chloe Colman), who had recently been kidnapped by Edgin’s old friend, Forge (Hugh Grant).
As the group of adventurers go through trial and error to save Kira, they learn to overcome their own personal internal struggles. Edgin has to overcome the fact he needs to be a better father, Holga has to move on from her trauma of being outcast from her village, Simon needs to overcome the fear of disappointing his ancestors and Doric needs to overcome her hatred of humans. Throughout their journey, the characters form close bonds with one another, becoming more and more like family as the story progresses. The interactions that these characters do have with one another are heartwarmingly sweet and are enjoyable to watch.
This movie’s strengths were the characters’ developments, the character designs and the music. Each of the characters' developments were realistic and unique. For example, Simon developed low self esteem as a result of his lack of magical skills and the fear of disappointing his ancestors, but after some self reflection, he realized that his self-worth is all up to himself.
The character designs in this movie were gorgeous. Xenk (Regé-Jean Page), the paladin, sported silver armor, with etched-in gold details, with a flowing cape to match. His armor captured a majestic vibe; perfect for the role of a paladin.
Another great thing about this movie was the music. During a chase scene where Doric is chased by guards, fast paced, adventurous music is played that perfectly compliments the intensity of the scene, along with the medieval fantasy setting.
Although the movie was great, it did have some noticeable flaws. One of the flaws was the lack of time characters had to interact with each other. The large amount of combat scenes in this movie gave little room for moments for characters to interact with one another. Some of the dialogue in this film felt clunky as well. The dialogue occasionally felt unnatural, due to the amount of forced snark coming from the characters.
Despite its flaws, “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” is a great fantasy film full of amazing music, beautiful designs and strong characters.
