Cos' I Said So...

Ever since I read “Once Upon a Broken Heart” by Stephanie Garber earlier this summer, I have been waiting for its sequel “The Ballad of Never After” which came out on Sept. 13. I’m proud and heartbroken to say this book was worth the wait.
After finding out who had poisoned her fiance, Apollo, Evangeline Fox can never trust or lose herself to the charms of the Prince of Hearts. After being put under a few curses that link to Apollo, Evangeline must work with Jacks to find the four missing stones to open the Valory Arch, despite her wishes to never open it. Evangeline must go through old friends, old and new foes, and has to be mindful of her heart’s feelings.
This whole book was an entire roller coaster. I squealed with excitement, almost threw the book across the room (multiple times) and cried a whole bunch. There were so many twists and turns to last a lifetime and it made the book a lot more interesting. Garber’s writing is also amazing, detailed and extremely magical.
Evangeline Fox is one of the more relatable main characters I have ever read about. True, she has the power to open locked doors with her blood, but she believes in the best in people. She believes that people can turn over a new leaf and that every story ends with a happily ever after. Which I wish was true.
One of the best relationships I have ever read is Evangeline’s and Jack’s. Their banter with each other is top notch. Jack’s “I don’t care about you. I just need you alive to open the Arch”-vibe is to die for, literally. The only problem is Jacks is a Fate, an immortal being with powers and his power is his kiss is fatal to anyone who isn’t his one true love. So, they can’t kiss, but I have a theory that will hopefully be explored in the third book.
In the end, Evangeline is successful in her mission. However, in Jack’s very wise words “Ballads never end happily, everyone knows that,” and “The Ballad of Never After” didn’t end in love and happiness. It ended with pain, hurt and lost memories, taken away so she could forget about all she’d been through with who she truly loved.
