On July 22, pop artist Clinton Kane released his highly anticipated nine-song debut album titled, “MAYBE SOMEDAY IT’LL BE OK.” A cultivation of Kane’s personal experiences of loss, love, trauma and mental health, his stories are often emotional in nature and have resonated with so many fans, including myself.
Born in Perth, Australia he spent his time growing up between Perth and the United Kingdom. Introduced to music through Sunday worship, Kane taught himself how to sing and play multiple instruments. In recent years, he has risen in popularity after posting covers of various songs on YouTube and then transitioning into posting his own original music.
At the start of the album, there is “14,” which details Kane’s life and self-discovery from age 14 to 20. In a letter to fans posted on Instagram about the song, Kane wrote, “This song speaks about all the hardships and the questions about myself that I had in my head ever since I was 10. I hope you find peace when you listen to this song and strength in knowing you are not alone in this world.”
Lyrics such as the chorus “And I wish I was somebody else/Just to feel like I'm enough for myself/And I've been fighting with who I am inside my head” depict his inner struggle with himself and being enough. The song is extremely vulnerable and I believe many can relate to the emotions he feels and the inner struggle of finding yourself.
Another emotional song, “ONE MORE DAY WITH YOU,” expresses the pain he felt after losing his mother. A song that brings me to tears, you can feel the pain through his beautifully put lyrics. Lyrics like “It hurts too much/To let you go/And I'd trade the world to have just one more day with you” depict the pain he feels as he starts to process his mother’s death. Although he has had a strained relationship with his mother in the past, he seems to be struggling to accept that she is gone. His extreme vulnerability once again truly shows who he is as an artist and how he takes the hardest of situations and uses his music as a space to write about his emotions.
On the contrary, the last song on the album, “I WISH I COULD HATE YOU FOR BREAKING ME AND CALLING IT LOVE,” talks about his strained relationship with his mother, his father abandoning him and the trauma he endured growing up. Lyrics such as “And why does your love come with a punch/That I'll keep taking again and again?” and “Tell you I can't love the same 'cause you threw me away/And why couldn't I be enough?” seem to show how hard growing up was for him as he endured love from his parents that hurt so badly. This song definitely provoked a lot of emotions for me because there are definitely times when I am hurting and questioning myself, so pieces of the lyrics resonate with me. This song is definitely one you can scream and cry to and has quickly become one of my favorite songs that he has released.
Overall, this album is extremely emotional and vulnerable. Clinton Kane puts his emotions into songs in a way that no one else seems to be able to and in turn connects with the listeners so deeply. I absolutely love this album and think that the long wait for it was absolutely worth it. I’d highly recommend listening to the album as well as his other music if you have not already.
