Technology has been increasingly influential within our education system as teachers have started to utilize it when lesson planning and even providing assignments to students online. However the COVID-19 pandemic is what truly made technology the center of our public education system. Distance learning was made possible solely through technology as every class and assignment was provided to students online. Although technology has allowed for increased efficiency and allowed for schools to continue functioning through the pandemic, it has also created an even bigger gap for under-resourced students. Although schools provided Chromebooks for all students, these Chromebooks often underperformed in comparison to other laptops that some couldn’t afford.
Another huge problem posed was lack of internet access. As a solution, the school provided hotspots to students who had trouble with internet connectivity. Although this fixed issues at home, now that students are back on campus, the internet connection here needs to be improved.
The guest Wi-Fi is often very slow and makes it harder for students to finish their assignments. Not only does slower Wi-Fi make it harder for students to do work, but it also can negatively impact their ability to take tests. When taking a timed test, time is as important as knowledge and if half the time the students are waiting for the page to load, problems with Wi-Fi become a real concern.
I believe that it would be beneficial to both students and teachers for a faster and more efficient Wi-Fi connection was provided at school. As more and more devices get introduced to education, slow Wi-Fi will have a huge negative impact.
