When applying to schools and jobs one of the most important skills that recruiters and admissions officers look for is leadership skills, however, gaining leadership experience is often one of the hardest things to do for high schoolers.
High school students are faced with countless obstacles such as age, availability and time constraints when looking for ways to gain this experience outside of school. Many internships are very limited in the amount of spots available and are further limited by age restrictions that make most only open to seniors once they have turned 18.
Although it is hard to find leadership outside of school, students can also look for leadership opportunities inside school. One very obvious opportunity to learn and show leadership in school is by joining the leadership class. Although leadership is a great opportunity to lead within the school and plan events, other classes such as journalism can provide students with equally valuable leadership opportunities.
I have been a part of journalism since my sophomore year and throughout these three years I have gained many new skills that I would have been unable to in any other class. Even as a writer my sophomore year, I had to learn how to be a leader as I conducted interviews and planned out my articles. This year as News Editor, I have gained even more leadership skills as I learned how to manage staff writers and ensure that they were getting their work done while getting my own work done as well.
Newspaper has been a great way for me to get leadership experience while at the same time allowing me to help bring awareness to important issues on campus. If you ever want leadership skills and to be a part of a tight-knit community you should join The Pony Express.
