Following Joe Biden’s presidential win in November, Americans have been on edge, leading to the Jan. 6 riots on Capitol Hill. After such a frightening event, the presidential inauguration brought moments of peace with speeches and poems meant to inspire citizens.
The riot took place while Congress was in session to certify Joe Biden as the 46th president of the United States. As white supremacists, Trump supporters, conspiracy theorists and other people upset with the election’s outcome stormed in carrying weapons and other items, including Trump and Confederate battle flags, senators went into lockdown and later returned to confirm electoral votes about 12 hours later. Five deaths have been attributed to the chaos.
In the aftermath of this breach the Federal Bureau of Investigation began arresting the people who took part in the riots, labeling them as domestic terrorists. Nola Grace, 10, agrees with the FBI in their pursuit of arrests.
“I fully agree that the people who stormed the Capitol should be arrested. The people that did this swear they love their country but then storm the Capitol,” said Grace.
Ryan Tran, 1l, who identifies as independent, shares the same opinion that the FBI is justifiable in their pursuit of arresting Capitol Hill rioters.
“What the rioters did that day makes Republicans and others who supported Donald Trump look bad,” said Tran. Tran said he does not believe that Trump incited the violence, as he is currently being charged with in his second impeachment hearing.
The FBI’s decision to label these rioters as “domestic terrorists” has caused some controversy, but Tran believes the FBI is right in doing so.
“This event could pass as domestic terrorism, and those involved are traitors as well,” said Tran.
Following the events of Jan. 6, the House of Representatives called for Donald Trump's impeachment. Many believe this was long overdue and some think it may have been a waste of time as he was already finished with his term. Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) claimed “Donald Trump is a clear and present danger to our country.”
This was followed by a House vote of 232 to 197 in favour of the impeachment, making Donald Trump the only president to be impeached twice with several Republicans crossing party lines, the most notable of which being Liz Cheney (R-WY).
In spite of the tension in America, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’ inauguration took place Jan. 20. US History teacher Peter Glasser said he has been impressed with people from both sides of the aisle rising to the occasion.
“I’ve noticed people overcoming those divisions, for example, instead of focusing on Donald Trump, I would emphasize how impressed I was with Mike Pence, I thought Mike Pence’s behavior from January to the inauguration made me develop a new respect for him” said Glasser.
The past year leading up to today has been difficult for many Americans, causing deep political tension within the country. Events like the Capitol Hill riots will certainly go down in American history.
“Thinking about the events of January 6, 2021, I would put them right up there with the impeachment of Bill Clinton, the election of 2000, as the two other historical events I've lived through,” said Glasser.
Trump’s second impeachment began on Feb. 9, and this event and the attack on Capitol Hill will have an effect on this country for years to come.
“It's crazy how I will be telling my grandkids about these historical events,” said Grace.
