On Jan 18, singer-songwriter Benson Boone released a single called “Beautiful Things.” The song is about the fear of things going wrong when everything seems to be going well, and highlights plenty of emotions.
I hadn’t heard of Boone prior to this song, but to my surprise I did know one of his more popular songs, “In the Stars.” Knowing this, I had a feel for what kind of song “Beautiful Things” would be, so I had some expectations going into it.
The song starts off slow and wistful, almost, like “In the Stars” is, but picks up pace quickly almost halfway through, becoming more like an Imagine Dragons song. Still, unlike Imagine Dragons, the lyrics are about romance, life, and fears, giving the song more of a desperate tone compared to other music that has beats like this one. But to me, I think of it as a mix between pop-rock and the kind of feeling that some Radiohead songs give, like an angry or sad tone behind loud lyrics.
I am very new to reviewing or even listening to music, because I only recently started consistently listening to music and am fairly new to that world. Partly because of that, I feel that I hardly ever pay attention to lyrics in a song and to me, the tone and rhythm are the main determinants in my enjoyment of it.
“Beautiful Things” has really good lyrics, so if you are someone who enjoys thoughtful and relatable lyrics, this is a great song to listen to. For me, the overall feeling of the song was more important, and I thought that was also very well done. It was energetic and upbeat, but also carried a sadder and hesitant background which I liked a lot. It’s one of those songs I could listen to no matter what feelings I was having. However, I would have liked if the song were to stay at the slow tone in the beginning since I feel like that matched the lyrics better. The epic rock-esque rhythm that starts up halfway feels a little bit out of place, although that does convey the singer’s passion effectively.
“Beautiful Things” is a song that I could listen to occasionally and enjoy, and I’m sure people who like pop and indie music would like it even more.
The single “Beautiful Things” is now streaming on all platforms.
