Varsity cross country runner Jeffrey Hedlund, 11, is a captain of the team for his leadership qualities and athletic abilities, according to cross country coach Marc Klemencic.
Hedlund always shows up to practice unless he has an injury and he helps them when he notices that they are struggling all while maintaining a positive, lighthearted attitude. He also encourages everyone to always try their best.
“Jeff is aware of other team members' needs and will support them during practices. One time he stopped and waited during a timed distance tempo run for another athlete that was struggling with pace to give them encouragement and run along with them,” said Klemencic.
At the Oct. 14 race at Montgomery Hill, Hedlund finished first out of 27 people in his varsity boys race with a time of 15:42.2.
Other students on the team appreciate how he contributes as a team captain and they are very grateful for his help. Daya Kumaran, 11, is one of the other athletes on the varsity cross country team with Hedlund and she appreciates his leadership.
“Jeff is an amazing leader on the team. He’s welcoming and supportive to every teammate and is a great role model for all runners,” said Kumaran. “In addition to being one of the fastest runners on the team, his determination, positivity, and sense of humor create an environment that helps the team grow and improve.”
