The Bay Area is notorious for being expensive. From rising costs of living, gas prices being higher than the national average and food becoming more and more expensive, it is important now more than ever to make a difference in our community.
If you take one look at the articles in the Features section this month, you can see just how easy it is to make an impact on the community in a larger group. From donating blood to raising money and awareness for hunger, our school community has gone to great lengths to help others who need it most. So much good can be done in a collective effort, however there is still huge importance in volunteering individually.
I have seen firsthand the need in our community through volunteering at Second Harvest of Silicon Valley and how much joy and relief people feel when they receive their brown boxes packed with produce. The two to three hours spent in the sorting room make the biggest impact in the lives of others, more than I ever thought possible. Within my community, I have found another community of volunteers who share the same passion as I do: to give back to the community I love so much.
As we near the holiday season, many lose sight of those in the community who may be struggling. It could be your friend, neighbor or even family member who may be going through a tough time where they need support from those in the community. This season, it is up to us to provide that support. Giving back is something that makes such a huge difference to those around us. Even the smallest of acts, such as donating a couple of dollars or helping someone with their groceries, can make the largest impact on our community. These impacts ultimately are what connect our community and make it stronger than ever before. This holiday season, I urge everyone to give back in any way they can, even in the smallest way. You may never know who needs the community’s support the most.
