Averaging 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists, three steals and one block per game this season, Madi Fujii, 11 has proven that she is a force to be reckoned with on the girls’ varsity basketball program in the last three seasons.
Since Fujii leads the team in statistics, her girls’ varsity basketball teammate Riley Shigemoto, 11, said she plays well no matter the opponent.
“Madi has done a phenomenal job on the court. She is aggressive both offensively and defensively and always finds the open shot,” said Shigemoto.
Although a junior, Fujii’s leadership has elevated the rest of the team as she leads by example.
“She’s also a humble leader and some of the girls look up to her as a hard worker and she just really comes out and gives it her all, every single game,” said girls’ varsity basketball head coach Rob Zaccheo. “At the same time you can tell that when she brings things up, people listen to her.”
Between always showing up to practice and rarely getting subbed out of the game, Shigemoto sees how important Fujii is to the team.
“Madi has stuck to it and never backed down on both the team or the sport itself. Her dedication also shows on the court because, by attending all of the practices, she has been able to perfect certain skills and prove to opponents that she is someone to look out for,” said Shigemoto.
For the underclassmen on the team, Fujii has been a vital support and pushes others to be their best.
“Madi is so important to me as a teammate and as a friend. I have always looked up to her and she never fails to make me laugh,” said Lin. “I am so grateful that I get to be on a team with her.”
