Three-year varsity guard and forward Rex Denker, 12, has not only proved to his team his athletic ability but the passion he has for basketball.
Athletic director and boys’ varsity basketball head coach Joe Berticevich recognizes how dedicated Denker is to basketball both at school and with his family’s club team, Denker Basketball Academy.
“He’s been a three-year varsity player and one of the hardest working guys that I’ve coached in my coaching career,” said Berticevich.
By being a friend on and off of the court, teammate Christian Henriques, 11, has seen how Denker’s presence has impacted members of the basketball team.
“You can just tell he works hard and puts in work off the court as well by watching him play,” said Henriques.
Not only has Denker been able to prove his athletic abilities to the team, but he has also shown his leadership skills.
“He’s been a great leader for us, especially to some of the underclassmen,” said Moses Kim, 11.
Kim has noticed that Denker rarely misses practice and has shown his dedication to the sport through the amount of time that he spends on the court.
“He’s just a very solid varsity guy, he can shoot the ball well, he’s a good all-around guy,” said Kim.
As team captain, Denker has also been able to create friendships and a comfortable atmosphere at practices. Berticevich has also noticed Denker’s practice attendance and how he leads by example, creating a positive impact on the rest of the team.
“He’s coachable, he’s a competitor. He understands to be successful, the time you have to put in to get to that level,” said Berticevich.
