After an opening was created in the physical education department, Michelle Mayhew stepped up and took on a sixth period class, giving her the opportunity to teach PE for the first time.
Through teaching this class, she is able to share her passion for fitness with students and is encouraged by their attitude even with challenges with distance learning.
“I enjoy working out and physical fitness, and this gave me the opportunity to share that enjoyment with a class,” Mayhew said. “Even though I am very novice at teaching PE, the students are flexible and are super supportive.”
Despite the added difficulty of interacting with classmates and workouts that require specific equipment, students have been able to participate with few technological issues and the class is running smoothly online. Mason Mayer, 9, really enjoys the class and Mayhew’s teaching although he is looking forward to when school can return to in-person learning.
“I like that Ms. Mayhew is really chill and is very encouraging,” Mayer said. “When you get in her class, she actually makes the class fun.”
While physical health is a large part of this class, Mayhew wants students to see how PE can be fun and different, and has also been working to ensure that students are taught how to lead a well balanced life.
“I want the students to get excited for PE and realize that it's not always just about working out,” Mayhew said. “Physical health is just a piece of the wheel and that we need to have positive mental, emotional and social health to be well rounded and balanced.”
By opening the class beyond the scope of just fitness, Mayhew has been able to reach her students and form a deeper connection. Nima Ghezavat, 9, feels that Mayhew is extremely supportive of her class and students, working hard to make sure that they can do well in her class.
“She’s been super nice and is always there to help us with anything that we have an issue with,” Ghezavat said. “She always makes some time for us after school if we have any questions on things that we are struggling with in PE so she can help us.”
