On Nov. 19, pop star Adele released her newest album “30” following a six-year album dry-spell.
For Adele fans everywhere, this album has been an exciting announcement and a long time coming.
“30” holds special meaning for the pop artist, detailing her struggle through divorce and getting her son, Angelo, adjusted to the new way of life they’ve come to know.
As a kick-off to the release of her newest album, the single “Easy on Me” was released on Oct. 15, achieving the record for most streams in one day on Spotify at 24 million. The ballad opens with a beautiful piano, leading into her singing about her harsh childhood, painful divorce, and lessons learned through her experiences. Overall, this song is very powerful and I applaud her for being able to reach out and express the hardships she has endured over the past couple of years.
Opening the album is “Strangers by Nature.” This song has an eerie feel with many deep vocals. As the song moves into the chorus, the vocals seem to transition into a slight minor key, unlike many of the songs on the album, providing a greater depth that reels in the listener. This song is very different from many of her songs from previous albums, with it detailing hardship and loss rather than love. Within the album, this song really stands out to me as it is so different from any of her previous songs in the past, and remains one of the absolute favorites I’ve heard from her thus far.
We then move to “My Little Love,” an emotional song relaying her explanation of divorce to her son, while figuring out her own emotions and how to rebuild. Packing an emotional punch, lyrics such as “I feel so bad to be here when I’m so guilty,” expresses her guilt of not making her marriage work. This song has become another one of my favorites for its deep emotional meaning and the deeply personal voice memos featuring her son, Angelo.
Two songs later, we are hit with “Oh My God,” one of the more light-sounding songs packed into this album. Although the song is one of the more fun-sounding ones, it appears to have a deeper meaning as well. Lyrics such as “Lord, don’t let me, let me down (don’t let me let myself down)” show that she is in a constant fight with herself to rediscover who she is as a person post-divorce. This rediscovering has helped her to find who she really is and blossom in her newfound identity.
Towards the end of the album, “Hold On,” details her emotional battle within, with lyrics such as “Right now I truly hate being me” and “just let time be patient.” It seems as though she is struggling with her identity as a person, mom, and divorcee. She also feels as though she has failed to make her marriage work for her son, although she was not at all happy and free.
Overall, I absolutely love this album and all the raw emotions intertwined within each of the twelve songs. All the raw emotions truly help add depth to every song on this album. I would recommend listening to this album to anyone who is looking for a set of songs packed with emotional messages hidden. I cannot wait to see what Adele releases next in the future, and look forward to continuing to see her grow as a person and artist.
