To be Honest...
By: Matthew Andrejka

We all know about birth control and condoms as a use of contraceptives. With the rise of sex education in the US, more people are aware of the dangers of unprotected sex. However, there are lessons being left out that are important for most students to know.

Sex education at Pioneer, while it does talk about contraceptives and healthy heterosexual relationships, it leaves out important details of healthy homosexual relationships and living with sexually-transmitted diseases.

HIV is more common among the gay community. HIV/AIDS was mentioned in class, but I was never taught how people live with AIDS. It is a common misconception that once you have AIDS, your life is pretty much over. The school sex ed class never taught me about the life after contracting AIDS, so I took initiative and taught myself.

Similar to Plan B, there is a contraceptive for AIDS that I never learned about in school. Post-exposure prophylaxis reduces the chances of contracting AIDS after sexual activity, if you take it within 72 hours and throughout the following month.

There are other options despite what sex ed teaches you. While the school might not be able to change their curriculum anytime soon, it is important to be aware of all your options. Take initiative for your sexual health.
